It's that time of year again! Back to school, time for a new grade, new friends perhaps, and of course new fashions! I put together a list of 7 pieces, which will be must-haves and essentials during the new fall session. Now, these are just pieces that will work for any individual, however, there are lots of other trends to discover. Don't have a lot of money, or need ideas rejuvenating that old wardrobe? I got it for you (:
1. Cardigans! Cardigans! Cardigans! - this simple sweater is a definite must have in any closet. Whether it be the longer boyfriend sweater, or a knitted hooded one for those chilly days, it is an essential in any wardrobe. Experiment with colours, though purple and navy will be top choice this session. (Purple boyfriend sweater - wetseal, Navy hooded cardigan - American Eagle) TIP: Recycle those summer tank tops by layering them under various cardigans
2. A sturdy tote/book bag - Practical, but chic. We need something to carry those books in, so a sturdy tote or book bag is essential. Lots of variety in styles, check out my article for book bags if you'd like more ideas. (L.A.M.B Edinburgh Clydebank Tote - Nordstrom)
TIP: Have an old tote bag? Freshen it up by adding some pins, charms, key chains, etc.
3. Dark wash denim - While we enjoy our light washes during summer, fall is all about dark washes. Sophisticated, but still casual enough for every day wear. Tried of the sea of skinnies? Try a straight leg; the look is very slimming and flattering for most. Of course, the classic bootcut can also be rocked this season. (left: Earnest Sewn Decca straight leg jeans - net-a-porter.com, right: Ella Straight Leg - Bluenotes)
4. Blouses - Always a must-have, but bow-tie blouses are definitely in for this school year. White and striped are good choices, and will work with a variety of outfits.
TIP: Layer a cute sweater vests over for a preppy look. Roll up the sleeves, add stacks of bangles, and a funky scarf for a more boho look.
5. Toasty warm Coat! - With the weather getting chillier, you will want to look for a jacket / coat to keep you warm while still maintaining a fashionable chic. I personally love wool trenches; longer for the winter, shorter for the fall. (left: Solid Wool 8 Button Trench Coat - Wet Seal, right: Artifacts Short Melton Pea Jacket - Nordstrom)
TIP: If you are short in height, stick to coats that hit just above the butt or slightly below. Longer trenches will just swallow you up.
6. Rainbow of Tights - Thanks to fashion icon Blair Waldorf, tights remain a popular addition to many outfits. Black is a must-have, but if you like experimenting with colours, check out purple, cherry red, and lemon yellows. You can wear these cheap thrills under skirts, shorts, and mini dresses, which lets you recycle lots of your summer pieces.
7. Signature Accessory - Blair has her headbands, Massie from the Clique has her charm bracelet and you too should sport something that is your claim to fame. Whether it be headbands, or cute scarves, start building up a collection. These are inexpensive accessories which make you stand out from the sea of look-a-likes. (headband and scarf - Forever21)
